Vergilian Park
On a Sunday like so many, after the usual week of study and intense work, when summer is still a long time away, but spring has already arrived, there is nothing better than enjoying the warm March sun while finding the most hidden corners of your city.
On Sunday, March 26th we decided to walk in a place in our Naples, unfortunately unknown to tourists and Neapolitans themselves; in Piedigrotta, in the neighborhood Chiaia,located between the Riviera di Chiaia, Piazza Sannazzaro and the mergellina railway station, behind the church of S. Maria di Piedigrotta, hidden and silent there is the wonderful Vergiliano Park,not to be confused with the Virgilian Park of Posillipo, in which two souls rest that will always resist time and history, Publius Virgil marone and Giacomo Leopardi.
The Park houses:
- the cenotaph of Virgil, aColumbarium of the Roman age believed to be the tomb of the poet;
- the Tomb of Giacomo Leopardi,a tall macaw, inside a tuff cave;
- the Crypta Neapolitana (also called Grotta di Pozzuoli or Posillipo), a Roman gallery that connects Mergellina and Fuorigrotta;
- anewsstand in piperno with two tombstones,dating back to 1668, on which is engraved a list of diseases treatable by the thermal waters present in the Phlegraean area.
A suggestive green and silent corner with a splendid view of Naples, is the ideal place to walk and above all unplug from a noisy and fast world that seems to be very far from this park.
Admission to the Park is free and you will have the opportunity to visit it every day from 9 am to 2:50 pm, except on Tuesdays, closing day.
