If you are wondering which cities to visit in Menorca, perhaps we can help you with this small 1-day itinerary that touches the main cities of the island from north to south and from east to west. You could take inspiration from this tour for a particularly cloudy day that maybe doesn’t allow you to go to the beach but be ware, it’s a tour exclusively for those who rent a car.
We depart from Cal’n Bosch, then begin our tour from Cittadella, oneof the most elegant cities on the island, as well as the former capital of Menorca. Park your car, without forgetting the ticket if you park on the blue stripes and start your walk in this city so alive: life flows fast, the wind caresses the flags of Catalonia, the market is a feast of colors and voices, the smell of chocolate and cheese floods the medieval streets. Get lost among the wonderful buildings and stone streets where all the color and warmth of Spain flows. Cittadella offers many panoramic points from which you can see the port or the great Monte del Toro. Let us see from afar the great obelisk of Mr Plaça d’es Born; the square is full of people, today is market day and we get lost in the colors of fabrics and jewelry. The city centre is very elegant and embellished with the glitz of baroque churches, such as the Cathedral. Today the famous fish market is closed, but despite not being full of people buying, buying or just checking out it is impossible not to notice the beautiful 1895 building that houses it…. Behind it is the town hall that offers one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the town.
We move for lunch to one of the highest points of Fornells Island from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of Menorca. In October Fornells, unlike many other cities, already enjoys a normal daily life: children leaving school, the noise of dishes in houses, the silence of the siesta in some streets. In the quiet and collected center, the yellow of the municipality and the church of Sant’Antonio shine in the sun and shine on an expanse of white lime houses. Here we eat menorquino in a restaurant that welcomes tourists, commuters and workers on break. With 15 euros you eat king: we taste macaroni with broccoli, mushrooms and Menorca cheese, lamb with potatoes and mixture of vegetables, plaice with crusted potatoes is a Catalan cream to lick your mustache.
Afternoon stop is Mahón. It is 4 pm and the old city still stacked, its activities begin again. Mahón’s plaza de España is semi-deserted, chairs and coffee tables waiting for it to be aperitif time. In the plaza de la constitución some boys exchange confidences while a large sign to say no to violence against women peeps on the tuff brick wall.
Throughout the center The colonial style is embellished with touches of Baroque, style of all the wonderful religious buildings present in the capital. A strong but not too cold wind is beginning to blow from the sea: from the belvedere of Plaza Miranda you can see the sea agitating even in the safest waters of the port. From this city that will begin and end your journey to Menorca; a few kilometers from the airport and the main port, the place where you will salute the island and like us, with a bit of bitterness in your mouth, with the impression that you can never see enough, you will say goodbye …
