There are many pizzerias in Naples, it is true. I always say it, wherever you go, if you are in Naples, in the historic center of Naples, you will eat the best pizza of your life.
The pizza of Naples really creates addiction: its dough, the taste of the sauce, that scent of basil… there is something magical about a Neapolitan pizza and in each slice there is the verse of a poem.
But if you want to make a real “journey through time” by taste a Neapolitan pizza then there are places that are almost sacred places, real temples of pizza. No, unfortunately in this list you do not find Sorbillo or Di Matteo. Here you will find, the real, the historic pizzerias of Naples, those that serve you at the pizza table and tales of the city and its people.
Pizzeria Brandi
Located in Via Sant’Anna di Palazzo, on the Spanish Quarters, here you do not enter a pizzeria… enter the first pizzeria.
Well if you wanted to know where Her Majesty the Pizza Margherita was born… now you have the answer!
Pizzeria Mattozzi
Ask for Piazza Charity and you will find the Pizzeria Mattozzi, there since 1833. For years and generations, Pizzeria Mattozzi in Naples has been run by the Surace family. Lello Surace in 1984 founded the association verace Pizza Napoletana with the aim of spreading and preserving the art of Neapolitan pizza all over the world and let’s not forget that, today our beloved pizza is recognized Unesco Heritage!
Ancient Portalba pizzeria
The “oldest” of the Pizzerias of Naples. Well, the Ancient Pizzeria Portalba was born in 1738 as an inn and in the early 1800s began to churn out pizzas. But gentlemen, these weren’t any pizzas… these were the pizzas loved by artists and writers; don’t you believe it? you’ve never heard of Gabriele D’annunzio…. seems to be going crazy.
Pizzeria Lombardi
We could also forgive you if you have not heard of it but, if you go to Naples and do not go to eat pizza at Pizzeria Lombardi in Via Foria, no, we can not really pass on it. You’d miss one of Naples’ historic pizzerias, as well as Benedetto Croce’s favorite pizzeria… is enough as motivation?
Pizzeria Trianon
The Trianon pizzeria, standing since 1923, takes its name from the Trianon theatre and artists have seen it pass: Totò, Macario, Nino Taranto… and you know what everybody wanted? The cart-wheeled pizza! and how do we explain what it is now? Well, imagine a pizza but bigger, bigger, one of those pizzas that make your heart smile!
Pizzeria Starita in Materdei
Let’s take a trip in 1901 and end up in the area of Materdei where Starita is located, pizzeria but also fryer. Speaking of frying, do you remember a young and beautiful Sofia Loren as the pizzaiola in “The Gold of Naples”? Well know that manpower and advice for the film, were offered by the pizzeria Starita.
Pizzeria Gorizia
Our parents remember her with such affection. Born in 1926, the soldiers engaged at the front, were preparing to enter Gorizia and lo and behold… what better name. Located in the Vomero district, the Gorizia pizzeria was a haunt of Napoli Football and all the famous actors who performed at the Teatro Diana.
