When we first visited San Nicola Arcella, in search of the famous Arco Magno, the most difficult thing is to understand where it was located and how to get there.
The truth is that we had read many articles on the Arco magno and many tips for finding parking but no one gave precise directions to get there.
Let’s forget about various Navigators and Google Maps that took us to various different beaches but no trace of the Arco Magno.
San Nicola Arcella: where Google Maps takes you
Surely you are reading this post because you are in the car and Google Maps, when you typed in San Nicola Arcella, Arco Magno, directed you to Praia.
Well, according to the locals, from that long white beach of Praia, the only way to get to the Arco Magno is to walk along the stairs that lead to a closed gate and then continue swimming for a few meters.
It may also be that the navigator has taken you to a viewpoint: needless to say, we know, you can’t even see the Arco Magno of San Nicola Arcella from there.
The right directions
Contrary to the most common indications of navigators, do not follow the signs for Praia but precisely those for San Nicola Arcella.
The ideal is to look for the road signs to the Arco Magno Resort Hotel.
Look for parking, if you arrive early you will find free ones near the train station, otherwise you will have to leave your car in one of the paid parking lots, which cost around 7-8 euros for the whole day.
Caution: However, you should arrive very early, the paid parking lots run out quickly. They generally open at 8:00, so try to get early.
Then walk along the promenade with the various bathing establishments and you will see in front of you a path with uphill stairs.
Follow the entire route which in some places is a bit steep and dusty but will give you a beautiful view of the sea and you will then arrive at the Arco Magno.
Some tips for the Arco Magno of San Nicola Arcella
- Try to get there early to make the most of the beach, without too many crowds.
- Arrange your things under the cave: the sea could be rough or there could be high tide so the small beach could be completely swallowed by the water.
- Bring some extra towels to use after your bath: the arch creates a shaded area that lasts for many hours of the day and you may even feel cold.
