Let’s make a premise: if you don’t come back from Calabria with at least 3 kg more then you haven’t enjoyed this region at all, but we respected the rule and in Calabria we tried to taste as many things as possible (and yes, we got fat)
Here then, what to eat in Calabria in our opinion:
Onion
It is forbidden to say “I don’t eat onion”, especially in front of the red onion of Tropea. The taste of Calabria, the protagonist of the Tropean salad and you will see … will be the most requested souvenir by your relatives
Ndujia
This too, you can’t miss. Be careful, it is not spicy … it is fire that burns on the taste buds but it is definitely a Must to eat in Calabria (and this too to take home)
Filejia or scialatelle
A type of Calabrian pasta, handmade with ancient origins and a very particular preparation for which a stick of esparto or broom wood is used.
Pipi e pati
A side dish we loved: potatoes and peppers for which there is no light cooking. The watchword is: oil, oil and more oil
Pitta china
Also known as Torta Pasqualina, it is a cake made with bread dough and often stuffed with pipi and pati.
Tuna and Swordfish
You cannot not eat in Calabria, these two breeds that are really tasty and that the Calabrians cook with great masters.
Little tip, don’t miss the Swordfish in Scilla.
Truffle of Pizzo
Greedy and chocolate lovers, this is for you. The Pizzo truffle is one of the unmissable dishes of Calabrian cuisine. A sphere-shaped ice cream with a hazelnut flavor, with a heart of melted chocolate and sprinkled with bitter cocoa.
Bergamot
it is true the article is titled “eating in Calabria” but you can’t not drink a little something! Not only the wines of Cirò but also the Bergamot distillate. In addition, many Calabrians recommended Spritz8, a bergamot-scented spritz to be sipped in front of the sunset in Catanzaro Lido.
