Ponza, the queen of the Pontine islands, among fishing boats and yachts, remains one of the Italian destinations of the dolce vita Not particularly cheap for a holiday, however, it can also be a destination for a short weekend or a last minute trip.
We spent a day in Ponza and we tell you what to do.
You will probably leave Formia like us and the first ferry to the island in the summer leaves at 8:00.
You can board both the car and the scooter with a supplement that varies according to the season.
We have embarked on our Beverly 300 scooter but if we can afford to give us some advice, then we suggest you rent one on the spot since you will still be limited in using this by the ZTL which do not allow non-residents to roam around the island.
The navigation to Ponza da Formia lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Once disembarked, we recommend that you immediately go to aboat rental. Well, if you only spend 1 day in Ponza then you will not be able to participate in the excursions, the departure of which is at 11:00.
Leave your baggage in the appropriate deposits or at the rental offices.
To rent the boat in Ponza an identity document and mobile phone number will be required.
Generally it is possible to rent boats and rafts with engines between 15 and 20 horsepower at an affordable price, for which a boat license is not required.
The rental of these boats ranges from 80 to 150 euros for the whole day that you will pay at the end of the day. Fuel is excluded; then calculate about 10 liters to circumnavigate the island at an average cost of 2 euros per liter. The return is scheduled for 17: 30/18: 00.
Before departure, if you are not already organized, buy lunch on the port, for example a sandwich or some white pizza stuffed at la bottega di Luli.
On board your boat you will almost certainly also find a cooler to keep water and food cool.
Here is the tour that we recommend:
Why did we suggest you to rent a car but a boat?
Because the island of Ponza has only two beaches accessible by land and it would be a shame not to be able to visit the incredible caves and valleys that characterize the island.
On your return, treat yourself to an aperitif at sunset in one of the bars in the port or perhaps by the pool in your hotel.
For the evening, instead, we recommend that you give up a little view and enjoy delicious Ponzese cuisine at the restaurant at a casa di Assunta.
After dinner enjoy the pedestrian area and the center of Ponza with a walk through the streets of the city illuminated by the warm light of the street lamps.
If the next day you have the ferry then you could dedicate yourself to the tour of the island by land also during the morning.
Small tip: if you plan the return on Sunday, buy tickets first or you risk not finding any!
