You say Merano and think of Birra Forst,an all-Italian production and excellence of South Tyrol, which has always been synonymous with quality but often also associated with the delicious and typical food of Trentino that you can taste in its breweries.
No diet when in Merano, forget basmati rice and cod and get ready for rivers of beer and canede them that only when you think about it rises your appetite and water comes.
If last time in Merano we had gone in search of restaurants in perfect Tyrolean style, this time we went on a mission for you: a food and wine tour of the best Forst breweries in the city for a quality control of the dishes offered accompanied by the famous beer.
Forst Black Cat Brewery
Apparently this historic brewery has recently reopened its doors and with a new management. Tyrolean style for the rooms and for the very nice waiters. We are in the upper room of the pub, super heated (but here in Merano it is very normal) and here is our dinner:
Maltagliati with rye flour, gorgonzola, radicchio, pine nuts and walnuts: delicious, perhaps the best dish I ate during your stay. Fresh pasta, flavors and textures perfectly in harmony.
Beer: FORST PILS VIP
Egg dumplings with veal ragout: the fresh dumpling is very good and the ragù is also good despite Francesco being instead a great fan of venison ragout.
Beer: KRONEN
A portion of sautéed potatoes: simple potatoes cut into slices and sautéed in a pan, presented at the table almost as if it were a tortillia, perfect to accompany a second round of beer.
Forst Brewery Course of Freedoms
At Christmas time this brewery is perhaps one of the most photographed in the city for its beautiful decorations. In addition, this brewery is very famous for the various “themed” rooms and the terrace that in summer is one of the favorite places for customers. What did we eat at this Forst brewery?
Classic Canederli in Broth, good, little to add when it comes to classics.
Tagliolini with rabbit ragout, a hearty and very tasty dish.
Pan-fried beef straccetti with potatoes and onions and accompanied by cappuccia and speck salad, certainly the dish that surprised us the most: despite being presented as a high-atxin specialty, no we had still tried it and marked it in the list of recipes to be proposed at home
We accompanied dinner with Forst VIP PILS and Forst Felsenkeller
Forst Lagundo Brewery
Perhaps the most characteristic of breweries, the one with the added value of being directly on the Forst brewery that you can also visit. We stayed for dinner at this lovely place with Mr. Alexander, owner of the Westend hotel we were guests of.
Also here, many rooms in perfect Tyrolean style, with wooden tables, ceilings and chairs. The protagonist here too, beer but also the good cuisine of Trentino.
Here’s what we ate at Forst Brewery in Lagundo:
Spatzle with cream and ham and noodles with venison ragout, both very good dishes that we know well but that we never get tired of and that have not disappointed our expectations.
Our second instead included: Shin, Meranese wurstel, speck and sauerkraut ( … higher athesis than this…) accompanied by sweet mustard and horseradish. Speaking of horseradish, I would tell you to be careful if you have never eaten it because it is quite spicy.
We accompany dinner with Forst Kronen and Forst Felsenkeller,as always excellent!
How to close dinner in a Forst i nmasterful beer garden? With a beer cake of course!
Birramisù,the alcoholic version of tiramisu: the savoyard wet is not coffee but beer, SIXTUS, the dark of the Forst house and we can assure you that the flavor is really delicate … to lick his mustache!
How much did we spend on dinners like this? In general a couple of medium beers each and a first course will cost you about 20 euros per person and after eating in many restaurants in Merano, we can tell you that the price is normal and allows you to enjoy at least one typical dish and drink a beer made in Italy of excellent quality.
