Eating in Crete:
Taste and tradition at small prices
Cretan cuisine, more than anything else, includes the most typical dishes of the Greek tradition, to be clear the most famous ones, often revisited by some restaurants and tavernas but always in line with the classic flavors; these therefore include onions, cucumbers, garlic, cheeses and often spices. We believe that Greek cuisine is one of the best and most varied, as it includes both fish and meat dishes so it will be easy to please everyone’s palate. Plus eating in Crete, as well as throughout Greece, is really cheap not only for the street food part but also in real restaurants. So let’s see this roundup of Cretan/Greek dishes that we have enjoyed and that you can (indeed MUST) taste yourself:
Souvlaki
it is greece’s most famous skewer and collects various types of meat from lamb to pork sausage. It is generally accompanied by the well-known tzatziki sauce or yogurt sauce. Inevitable are vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers but also onion, widely used in Greek cuisine. We advise you to eat this skewer as a quick and substantial snack when you spend the whole day outside the house, so you will always find someone on the road preparing them to take away.
Moussaka
Moussaka is a delight for the palate. It is a baked eggplant, minced meat and béchamel but, in Crete we also enjoyed it with a nice high layer of potatoes inside and served in small containers of coccio, Of course eat the moussaka is not really ideal for those who are attentive to the line but it is a unique dish and for one evening you can give in to so much goodness.
Yogurt
absolutely our favorite breakfast. You can not go to Greece and not taste the typical yogurt: creamy, compact, very acidic but highly versatile, not by chance used a lot in the kitchen for both sweet and savory. We preferred to eat yogurt with honey, wax granles and dried fruits but very good even accompanied only by fresh fruit. Yogur t will also be offered in Creteas a dessert at the end of the meal, served with the topper of your choice.
Dolmades, 1st
Don’t be fooled by the look at all, if you don’t taste them you don’t know what you’re missing! Dolmades are rice rolls and minced meat wrapped in vine leaves. The taste is fresh and one pulls the other We ate them with an accompanying sauce based on eggs, lemon and parsley, a sort of delicate mayonnaise that perhaps also dampens a little the slightly acidic flavor of the roll that we repeat is still yummy even on its own.
Greek salad
A real institution at the table in Crete and throughout Greece.Aperitif, side dish, family breaker or tease to accompany beer, beerGreek salad is always present: it includes vegetables of various types such as tomatoes and cucumbers and in the middle of the dish a fresh slice of feta, typical Greek cheese, ubiquitous in their cuisine. Fresh, light and healthy, eat it when you want.
Kalamarakia Parish
Typical dish, nothing but a good fry from fresh squid, as suggested by the name that they are excellent accompanied by a good local white wine and although it is fried we advise you to order it for dinner in a nice restaurant of seafood specialties to enjoy the best of the good taste of fresh fish.
Gyros
Another dish that will “save” you lunches and dinners on the road is gyro; for About three euros you will have in your hands a pita stuffed with kebab-like meat. less spicy though, tzatziki, vegetables and onions that you can replace with french fries. It won’t be the ultimate in lightness but it’s a complete dish that drops down to perfection with an ice-cold beer.
Raki
You will be offered and you will not be able to refuse it at all. A very strong alcoholic, a brandy to be precise that you can enjoy at the end of the meal and for the Cretans is a symbol of hospitality and conviviality.. not by chance, in the company of the Cretans you will drink even more than one, so maybe avoid driving later.
